Potential Health Benefits

PolyGlycopleX®, or PGX as it will be referred to as here, is a proprietary substance containing polysaccharides and is marketed as a weight loss supplement.

In an animal study done in diabetic rats, researchers found that compared to rats that received inulin and cellulose, “body weight and food intake were significantly reduced” among those that received PGX. (1)

In a study done in 52 people (49 women, 3 men), participants “lost a significant amount of weight from baseline”, and researchers concluded that the use of PGX “is of benefit for short-term weight loss”. (2)

However, in a systematic review of randomized clinical trials, authors noted that PGX may “cause reductions in total and LDL cholesterol” but went on to say that the available studies had sample sizes that were too small, that they had deficiencies in reporting quality, and that they were funded by a single manufacturer. They called for more testing and better-controlled trials. (3)
