Potential Health Benefits
PolyGlycopleX®, or PGX as it will be referred to as here, is a proprietary substance containing polysaccharides and is marketed as a weight loss supplement.
In an animal study done in diabetic rats, researchers found that compared to rats that received inulin and cellulose, “body weight and food intake were significantly reduced” among those that received PGX. (1)
In a study done in 52 people (49 women, 3 men), participants “lost a significant amount of weight from baseline”, and researchers concluded that the use of PGX “is of benefit for short-term weight loss”. (2)
However, in a systematic review of randomized clinical trials, authors noted that PGX may “cause reductions in total and LDL cholesterol” but went on to say that the available studies had sample sizes that were too small, that they had deficiencies in reporting quality, and that they were funded by a single manufacturer. They called for more testing and better-controlled trials. (3)
Mulberries are fruit that come from the mulberry tree, which grows in regions in Asia and North America. Mulberry contains a potent amount of nutrients.
It may help to reduce fatigue. (12)
More study is still needed.
Unfortunately, this product requires you to take four capsules to reach a single serving. A bottle contains 45 servings.
When to Take It
This supplement can be taken any time of the day with a beverage.
|May have weight loss benefits||The main ingredient, PGX, has shown promise in some studies but more testing is needed|
|May be beneficial for diabetics||You have to take 4 capsules to get a serving|
|Comes in vegetarian capsules, so it’s vegan/vegetarian-friendly||They come in pills with a sticky consistency, making them difficult to swallow|
|Contains 2 grams of dietary fiber, which can aid in digestion|
The potential health benefits of this supplement are compelling: lose weight, improve your mental health, improve your overall health.
That may be true, but we’d like to see more clinical evidence to support it.
Potential side effects of PGX appear to be minimal, such as digestive discomfort. So it seems safe to try it and evaluate whether it’s effective for you or not. But as always, check with your doctor first, especially if you’re taking medications.Sources
