Best Biotin Supplements: Our Top 5 Picks

If you’re experiencing hair loss, thinning hair, brittle hair, or graying, you’ve probably wondered if there’s anything you can do about it. It’s only natural to value your appearance, and it’s unsettling to notice a decline in how your hair, skin or nails look, especially at a young age.

As we’ll see, biotin may not be the hair supplement for everyone. However, certain populations of people can see positive results from using biotin.

That’s what we’ll cover in this article: our picks for the best biotin supplements.

Before we jump into our choices for best biotin supplements, let’s take a look at what biotin is and whether or not you’d be a good candidate to benefit from it.

What is Biotin and Should You Take It?

Biotin makes up part of the vitamin B family and is also known as vitamin H. B vitamins, and especially biotin, play an important role in the health of the hair, skin, and nails and in converting nutrients into energy.

Biotin is an essential vitamin during pregnancy, as it plays an important role in embryonic growth.

Biotin deficiency is uncommon, as the majority of people get it through their diet in foods such as dairy, fish, eggs, spinach, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, avocados, nuts and more. However, even with a biotin-rich diet, some can still be prone to having a biotin deficiency.

Some signs of a biotin deficiency may include:

  • Hair loss
  • Brittle/dry hair
  • Dry skin/eyes
  • Red skin rashes
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Seizures

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may want to speak with your doctor to see if a biotin supplement could be right for you.

Biotin Supplements for Hair, Skin, and Nails

The relationship between biotin and the hair, skin, and nails is still relatively unknown. However, scientists have discovered that one of the symptoms of biotin deficiency is hair loss. (1)

There haven’t been enough studies to conclusively determine how much biotin supplements can help with hair, skin and nail health, but there have been a few with results indicating some benefits.

In one documented case, a 54-year-old woman suffered complete hair loss due to a biotin deficiency. After daily supplementation with 60mcg of biotin, the woman’s signs and symptoms of biotin deficiency reversed. (2)

In a 1993 study conducted in Switzerland, researchers found that biotin supplementation resulted in a 25% increase in nail plate thickness in a group of patients who had brittle nails. (3)

In one animal study done in biotin-deficient cows, supplementation with biotin led to a significantly reduced incidence of skin lesions and dry skin. (4)

These are all positive findings and good signs. With that being said, it’s clear more research needs to be conducted.

Our Picks for the Best Biotin Supplements

Given the links that have been made between biotin and the hair, skin, and nails, we have come to the conclusion that biotin supplements can help certain people with hair loss and skin and nail issues.

That doesn’t mean a biotin supplement will specifically benefit you though—if you don’t have a biotin deficiency a biotin supplement will likely have no effect on you. If you don’t have a lack of biotin and you’re experiencing premature hair loss or problems with your skin or nails, it’s best to consult with your physician to find out if there are other causes at the root of the problem.

With that in mind, these are our picks for the best biotin supplements on the market today.

1) Sports Research 2500mcg Biotin

Image of our pick for the best biotin supplement on the market, Sports Research 2500mcg Biotin

This Sports Research biotin supplement contains 5000mcg of biotin, a dosage that’s likely to be an adequate amount for most people with a biotin deficiency. It’s made with a veggie capsule and does not contain gluten, soy, artificial colorings or fillers.

It’s also non-GMO project verified, so it gives you the assurance that the ingredients haven’t been artificially manipulated.

In addition to providing a more than reasonable amount of biotin, this product is also made with coconut oil, which is known to have some benefits for the hair, skin, and nails.

There is some evidence indicating that coconut oil could be effective in preventing hair damage. (5)

Many skin conditions are caused by inflammation or have a correlation with it, and some studies suggest that coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties. (6) (7) (8)

Coconut oil is also effective at moisturizing the skin. (9)

Overall this is a well-formulated biotin supplement with more than just one way to promote healthy hair growth, plus some other benefits.

  • Contains a large amount of biotin for those with biotin deficiency
  • Coconut oil could be beneficial as well

  • Some have noted adverse side effects such as acne and the growth of silver hair

2) Vitafusion Extra Strength Biotin Gummies

Image of a bottle of Vitafusion Extra Strength Biotin Gummies

Vitafusion makes high quality and affordable products in the supplements and vitamins space.

Vitafusion’s biotin gummy supplement provides a large dose of biotin in an easily digestible and pleasant-tasting gummy form.

There are some issues we have with supplements and vitamins in gummy form. Namely, they’re difficult to produce with consistent levels of active ingredients across each gummy.

However, with that aside, they are a good alternative for those who have digestive issues with pill-form supplements/vitamins. For me personally, my stomach can’t handle softgels or tablets to the point where it causes vomiting, so I try to find mine either in capsule or gummy form.

There are some downsides to gummies though. They usually contain sugar, and this supplement has 3 grams of it per serving. 3 grams is not an outrageous amount, but it can contribute to tooth decay, so it’s important to brush your teeth after taking any gummy vitamins.

  • Gummy form makes them taste good and easy on the stomach

  • Contains sugar
  • Some users have reported breakouts and headaches as side effects

3) Hairfluence Biotin, Keratin, Bamboo & More

Image of a bottle of Hairfluence Biotin hair growth formula

The Zhou company takes an “all of the above approach” to this supplement and says their Hairfluence product contains a scientifically formulated “synergistic blend”. It indeed does have far more vitamins and minerals than your standard biotin supplement.

In addition to 5,000mcg of biotin, Hairfluence also contains:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C: Increases collagen production.
  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin B2
  • Niacin
  • Vitamin B6
  • Folate: Folate plays an important role in forming DNA and cell production, including those of the hair and skin. One study showed that a folate deficiency was found in people with premature graying. (10) A folate deficiency is also thought to be associated with thinning hair.
  • Vitamin B12
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Calcium
  • MSM (methylsulfonylmethane): Form of sulfur that “has the ability to form strong bonds that contribute to the strength of healthy hair”.(11)
  • Collagen hydrolysate: Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body and is essentially the glue that holds together the skin, muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons. Although there are questions as to how much collagen is absorbed into the body through supplementation, there have been multiple studies with positive results for the skin and nails. (12) (13)
  • Bamboo 70% extract: Contains silica, which is essential to your hair and skin, but is only required in small amounts and deficiency is rare.
  • Hydrolyzed keratin

The ingredients with descriptions are the most relevant/related to what most people are looking for when shopping for a biotin supplement, i.e. things that benefit the hair and skin. The other ingredients included in this supplement can have benefits for the hair and skin indirectly, but most people already get them through their diet or multivitamins.

If you’re thinking of trying this supplement for the hair and nails benefits, consider taking it as a replacement for a multivitamin if you’re taking one. There’s a lot of overlap here and overdosing vitamins can be harmful, or at the very least it’s ineffective going significantly over the daily recommended dose.

  • Includes a wide range of ingredients that can have a positive influence on the hair and skin
  • Could replace your multivitamin in addition to adding biotin into your diet

  • Contains some ingredients that are going to be superfluous to most people; i.e. vitamins that you get through your regular diet

4) Nature Made One Per Day Biotin Softgels

Image of NatureMade biotin softgels

Nature Made’s One Per Day Biotin Softgels contain 1,000 mcg of biotin, a dosage that’s going to be perfectly adequate for most people. In fact, while many consumers swear by the benefits they get from taking high-dose biotin supplements, the FDA has warned that taking large quantities of biotin can actually interfere with lab testing.

This supplement has been USP verified, a third-party certification that demonstrates the product successfully meets the criteria for having the ingredients in the correct amounts listed on the packaging and was manufactured in a professional and sanitary facility.

It contains no yeast, starch, preservatives or artificial flavors. It’s really as simple as it gets as far as biotin supplements go, but it’s plenty to get the job done.

  • No unnecessary additional ingredients
  • Contains enough biotin to address a deficiency without going overboard

  • If you’re trying to address hair loss/thinning hair, it only does it from one angle
  • Softgels may not sit well with your stomach

5) Nature’s Bounty Biotin

Image of a bottle of Nature's Bounty Biotin

There are a few supplements on the market with 10,000 mcg of biotin, this Nature’s Bounty Biotin being one of them. 10,000 mcg is a very high dose of biotin, so it’s recommended to consult your doctor if you want to try this supplement or any biotin supplement of this strength.

The body secretes out excess biotin, so it’s thought to be safe in higher doses, but it’s always better to be on the safe side. One of the downsides, however, is as I said before; high amounts of biotin in the body can interfere with lab testing which obviously isn’t good for when you need to get tested for whatever reason.

There could be other side effects of taking large doses of biotin over an extended period as well. For example, larger numbers of consumers report breaking out with the higher dosage biotin supplements.

With that considered, it’s impossible to gloss over the fact that high-dose biotin supplements do receive a lot of praise from the consumer side. Many report having thicker, stronger and faster-growing hair with a healthy shine. We experienced similar results in our own testing.

Nature’s Bounty Biotin has 90 liquid softgels for a 3-month supply.

One downside to Nature’s Bounty Biotin is that it contains at least a small amount of soybean oil, which is very high in polyunsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats can cause inflammation and multiple other health problems. (14) (15)

It also contains titanium dioxide color, which is used in food and supplements for whitening. There’s speculation as to whether this ingredient could be toxic to humans.

  • No artificial sweeteners or other flavors
  • Is free of gluten, sugar, and wheat

  • Contains soybean oil and titanium dioxide coloring
  • Has more biotin than is likely necessary

  1. Hello, what do you mean please by “If you’re trying to address hair loss/thinning hair, it only does it from one angle” about Nature Made?

    • Hi Sharon, we meant that it contains only one active ingredient (biotin). Biotin can be combined with other ingredients known for improving hair growth/health for a more holistic approach.
