Potential Health Benefits
Biotin is an essential nutrient, meaning the body doesn’t naturally produce it so you have to get it from your diet. Aside from it being necessary for the proper functioning of certain cell processes, there are multiple additional health benefits.
The most well-known health benefits that biotin is thought to promote are benefits to the hair, skin, and nails. That’s partly due to the fact that “signs of biotin deficiency include skin rashes, hair loss, and brittle nails”. (1)
Some studies indicate that biotin can help promote healthy hair. (2) (3) However, studies on biotin and hair health have been relatively small and done in patients with conditions affecting the hair. More studies and evidence are needed.
Participants in some studies have seen significant improvement in skin conditions after supplementing with biotin. (4) (5) However, these studies were done in infants and at small
There have been three small studies done on the relationship between biotin and the nails.
In the first, 71 patients took 2.5mg (2,500mcg) of biotin daily for an average of 5.5 months. 91% of them “showed definite improvement with firmer and harder fingernails after an average treatment”. (6)
Another studied the effects of biotin on groups of participants with varying degrees of nail health. The group with brittle nails saw an increase of 25% of their nail thickness. (7)
The last study had 25 participants and looked at how brittle nails responded to biotin supplementation. 63% of the participants “showed clinical improvement” in their condition. The rest did not see improvement. (8)
These results are promising, but again, these have been small studies and more research needs to be done to confirm the findings.
May Have Benefits for Diabetics
Researchers have found evidence in some studies indicating that a combination of biotin and chromium may help to lower blood sugar in people who have type 2 diabetes. (9) (10) (11) (12) However, in studies where just biotin was administered to diabetic participants, results were mixed.
If you have diabetes and are thinking of adding a biotin supplement or any other supplement to your diet, speak with your doctor first.
Necessary for Healthy Pregnancies
Getting enough biotin through the diet or through supplementation is important for pregnant mothers and during the breastfeeding period. (13) It’s recommended that pregnant and nursing mothers get 17% more biotin than normal. (1)
When to Take It
This supplement can be taken daily safely, as biotin is not toxic at high doses. However, it is 16,667% of the adequate intake (AI) for biotin so it’s more than necessary.
As a result, we think it’s fine to take this supplement less frequently than every day.
One serving size of this supplement is two gummies. But considering its potency, taking one at a time may be a better and more cost-effective option.
Vitafusion Extra Strength Biotin Gummies provide a potent dose of biotin in a safe and affordable package.
You get all the potential health benefits of biotin in gummy form, which may be the better option for you if pills or supplements that come in other forms upset your stomach.
The Vitafusion brand is owned by parent company Church & Dwight, which has been around for over 150 years so you have some assurance that this product is manufactured by a reputable company.
The only downsides to this supplement are that it’s made with gelatin and contains sugar.
If you’re a vegan/vegetarian and don’t consume products made with animal-based ingredients, the gelatin may be a deal-breaker for you.
It’s also a bit unfortunate that it includes sugar, but most gummy supplements do contain sugar due to the fact that it’s difficult to get a pleasurable taste in gummies without it. On the bright side, it is a very small amount of sugar that is unlikely to affect your health in any serious way.Sources
