Potential Health Benefits

Ketones are most known for being found in raspberries, but they’re found in other fruits and berries as well. Ketones are part of what gives these fruits their strong aroma.

The science on raspberry ketones is still very much in its infancy. There are some studies that show minor benefits and some that show little to no benefit at all.

The only real studies we have to go by are test-tube studies and studies done in animals.

In one study, mice were fed a high-fat diet and raspberry ketones. Researchers found that raspberry ketones “prevented the high-fat-diet-induced elevations in body weight”. Researchers concluded that raspberry ketones “prevents and improves obesity and fatty liver”. (1)

More research is needed to confirm these findings.

Raspberry ketones have been compared to capsaicin (found in hot red peppers) and synephrine (found in citrus plants), because it “might affect the lipid metabolism in similar ways to these compounds”. (2)

In a study done in obese patients, “significant differences” were seen in body weight, fat mass, lean mass, waist girth, hip girth, and energy levels between patients who received a supplement containing biotin compared to a placebo.

This may seem like a promising finding for raspberry ketones, but a “multi-ingredient supplement containing primarily raspberry ketone, caffeine, capsaicin, garlic, ginger and Citrus aurantium (Prograde Metabolism™ [METABO])” was used for this study. It’s not clear which ingredient promoted weight loss in the study’s subjects—it could have been one or more of the other ingredients.

Further high-quality research is needed on raspberry ketones in order to better understand it.
